For the preservation, protection, and maintenance of Lake St. Catherine |
Septic systems are not usually a topic of polite conversation but we want to change that! Living around Lake St. Catherine, we understand the value of good water quality. As residents, there are many things that we can do to protect Lake St. Catherine, and proper maintenance of septic systems is one important way that homeowners can do just that.
Through a neighborhood gathering, homeowners learn about the options for a well functioning onsite wastewater systems and good maintenance practices for wastewater systems on lakeshores.
Wastewater workshops help homeowners become familiar with septic systems and their maintenance. These events provide an informal opportunity for people who may never have seen a septic system to learn about them. A septic system specialist discusses operation and maintenance of septic systems. Attendees are provided with brochures and other resource materials to take home.
It’s a win-win situation – homeowners can save money and avoid costly emergency repairs while protecting surface water quality with a properly managed system.
On July 8th, 2022, Cristin Ashmankas, Environmental Analyst with the State of Vermont’s Department of Environmental Conservation, Drinking Water & Groundwater Protection Division gave a 'Wastewater Workshop' presentation to attendees at the Lake St. Catherine Country Club.
Cristin talked about the basics of septic systems: how they work, why they are so important, how they fail, and how to properly maintain them. She also outlined how they are designed, and the many different types of systems that are available - including innovative and alternative systems that can be used in unique situations.
She also discussed the rules, where to get help, and why it is so important that systems be fully working around the lake.
All this great information can be found in her presentation, which is attached below (click on the image to view the presentation):
As camp owners on the lakeshore, we have a responsibility to ensure that our properties are lake-friendly, and maintaining fully working septic systems should be a top priority.
